I briefly mentioned IBM during my LEAP25 highlights a few days ago, as I wanted to write a longer piece on this brand. I'm mainly a MAC user now, but did you know that my first-ever laptop was an IBM ThinkPad? Remember the one with the blue/red TrackPoint in the middle of the keypad? Also, as a former tennis player in my teenage years, IBM has been embedded in that sport for over thirty years, so following IBM's journey has been very organic for me.
As I reflect on IBM's storied journey through technology, we must give kudos to its commitment to innovation, sustainability, and human-centric progress. From its inception in 1911 as the Computing-Tabulating-Recording Company (CTR) to its current stature as a global technology leader, IBM has consistently demonstrated a profound dedication to advancing technology and societal well-being.
As you know, I'm all about stories and the evolution journey, so let me take you on a little IBM journey from the past to the present.
Building a Legacy Through Technology
IBM has been a pioneer since its inception. In 1964, the System/360 was introduced and marked a shift in the computing industry, it was the first system to offer interchangeable software and peripheral equipment, which set a new industry standard and helped transform IBM into the world's largest computer company.
In the 1980s we witnessed another milestone, the launch of IBM's Personal Computer in 1981, revolutionizing the personal computing industry and laying the foundation for the modern PC industry. In 2005 Lenovo purchased IBMs personal computer line including the ThinkPad brand. Since then Lenovo has integrated the IBM brands into their own product mix. Cool fact, IBM still has a role in designing the Think branded devices.
Fast-forward to the 21st century and we can all agree IBM has proudly remained at the forefront of technological evolution. From spearheading advancements in artificial intelligence (AI) with Watson to leading breakthroughs in quantum computing, IBM has continuously reinvented itself. It is not how you start that matters; it is the Journey and evolution that do.
Watson, for example, was initially known for defeating human champions Brad Rutter and Ken Jennings on Jeopardy in 2011, but it has evolved into a very sophisticated AI system capable of tackling complex challenges in healthcare, finance, and sustainability.
Sustainability and CSR
IBM formalized its corporate environmental policy in 1971 embedding sustainability into its core operations. Over the years, this approach has deepened, with the company setting ambitious goals to address environmental challenges.
One of those goals is that by the end of 2025, IBM aims to procure 75% of its electricity consumption from renewable sources, raising it to 90% by 2030.
Let's not forget, IBM is also at the forefront of ethical AI development. As AI becomes more integrated into our everyday lives, the importance of transparency, fairness, and accountability must remain a priority.
IBM has consistently advocated for responsible AI governance, emphasizing the importance of unbiased algorithms and explainable AI models.
Although we are not there yet this commitment is paramount in an era where AI is starting to shape everything we do, and we still have many unanswered questions.
Empowering People With Technology
IBM's influence extends beyond environmental initiatives. It has shown that it is invested in harnessing technology to empower individuals and communities. It offers online courses to empower professionals with the additional skills they need to leverage AI and other digital tools.
IBM's commitment to diversity and inclusion is evident in its efforts to bridge the gender digital divide. Although this is an area where we have a long way to go, by providing accessible education and employment opportunities for women, IBM is fostering a more equitable tech landscape.
As a woman, I wish there had been more opportunities when I was growing up, and although to this day, I still get less oppportunities because of my gender sometimes, I am glad to see the evolution and what it means for future generations to come.
To see change, we need to change, and we need the big tech giants to lead by example.
Another example is the IBM's "SkillsBuild" initiative. The program offers free education and professional development resources, focusing on in-demand tech skills like cybersecurity, cloud computing, and data science.
By offering underrepresented communities with these skills, IBM is helping create a more inclusive digital economy and shaping a more promising future.
IBM at Mobile World Congress 2025 - Transforming the future of connectivity with AI
Historically, IBM has used this global platform to showcase cutting-edge technologies and forge strategic partnerships. So what can we expect this year?
IBM is expected to unveil developments in AI and quantum computing promising to revolutionize industries by solving complex problems more efficiently and effectively. IBM's Quantum System One, already operational in several countries, may see new enhancements that push the boundaries of computational power.
In their own words, "We'll guide industry leaders in reaching their connectivity and revenue growth goals through the transformative power of AI."
This year, you can find them at the IBM booth #2H20 in hall two. IBM's history of collaboration suggests new potential partnerships announcements with governments, NGOs, and other corporations to tackle global issues.
